Micklegate
Bar is York's Gateway to the south and thus, under the Bar arch,
most of the English Soveriegns and many a noble procession have
passed.
Amongst those
who didn't enter through Micklegate Bar were:
- Richard
I (The Lion Heart)
Who hardly spent any time in England due to foreign wars.
- Henry VIII
Who was expected at Micklegate in 1541, but entered through
Warmgate Bar instead, this was of great annoyance to all the
local dignatories who were waiting at Micklegate and then had
to hot-foot it over the Ouse Bridge to meet the King.
The photograph
above was taken in June 1971, and shows Queen Elizabeth II entering
York.
